Users of the well-known Cakewalk PC sequencer can now take advantage of a nifty
new Russian MIDI plug-in. NTONYX, based in Novosibirsk, have developed Style
Enhancer Micro, a sophisticated MIDI manipulation tool which implements the
fruits of research into the computer modelling of musical performance (dubbed
Performance Modelling). With the help of special rules, SEM analyses MIDI
sequences and inserts and changes MIDI commands and controllers - such as
velocity, volume and pitch-bend. The result of the transformation is either a
simulation of a live musician playing a real instrument, or a performance with a
"new, unreal" character. The transformation of MIDI data is undertaken in real
time, and a control panel gives users access to a large number of performance
parameters; it's also possible to influence the transformation of data using any
hardware MIDI controllers. A library of 100 musical style algorithms is
included. System requirements are a Pentium 100MHz or better running Windows 95 or 98,
16Mb RAM, a compatible soundcard and/or MIDI interface, or a Pentium 120MHz with
Windows NT 4.0, 32Mb RAM, NT 4.0 compatible soundcard and/or MIDI interface.
